Boomer M20 - the world's first tunneling drilling rig with hydraulics integrated into the booms

Protecting hydraulics, sensors and cables in the new Boomer M20 from Epiroc helps keep unplanned downtime to a minimum and maximize uptime and productivity in the most challenging environments. This is a new generation of equipment for underground work.

Constant wear and tear on hydraulic hoses is one of the most common causes of equipment downtime in underground operations. The ingress of rock debris, as well as continuous friction with the soil and the sides of the workings, lead to the need for constant repair of hoses. The Boomer M20's heavy-duty boom design minimizes unscheduled downtime due to hose repairs and keeps the rig running smoothly even in the toughest conditions.

“The Boomer M20 was developed in close collaboration with our key customers and is the result of extensive research and real-world testing. This is the ideal solution for mining companies and contractors who want to outperform the competition through innovation,” says Niklas Berggren, Global Product Manager – Drilling Equipment at Epiroc.

Automatic functions for increased productivity, reliability and quality of work

The Boomer M20 delivers precision and productivity with automation, remote monitoring and digital drilling data capabilities that provide increased reliability and quality throughout the drilling cycle. Using the High Performance Development concept on the Boomer M20, the operator can edit and upload drill data sheets directly on the face, eliminating the need for editing in a surface office.

“When working with digital drilling plans, the penetration depth increases, the accuracy increases, and the discrepancy between the actual mine profile and the design one decreases. Overall cost savings can be up to 25% and productivity gains up to 40%,” says Berggren.

Safer working conditions

The Boomer M20 drilling rig meets safety requirements and provides a safe working environment for operators through various design features.

“We thought about safety from day one. This is our main goal, and we have made great efforts to ensure the safety of the operators who work with this machine,” says Berggren.

Remote control features allow operators to drill at a safe distance from the bottom and continue working even during shift intervals.

Ergonomic multi-function joysticks optimize plant control, improving control over work processes. The unique cab design provides optimal visibility, while sound-absorbing and vibration-isolating materials keep noise levels as low as 65 decibels. Another important advantage is safe platforms for installing anchors, which make it possible to prevent a person from being under an unsecured excavation roof.

Battery Drive Option

As Epiroc continues to drive emissions reduction in underground mining, the Boomer M20 comes with optional battery-electric drive. The battery-powered Boomer M20 provides additional savings on maintenance, ventilation and air cooling.

“With the built-in charger, the operator does not have to schedule charging as it happens automatically when connected to the electrical network while drilling. The Boomer M20's large battery capacity provides incredible range. With it, nothing will interfere with the tunneling cycle,” says Berggren.

A new look at the mining industry

“We got into this because we love solving real problems. Because we love to make discoveries and find opportunities in new approaches. The Boomer M20 is another great example of how our innovations are changing the world for the better,” says Helena Hedblom.
