Bentonite is a natural clay mineral based on montmorillonite (a highly dispersed layered aluminosilicate). A distinctive feature is the ability to swell greatly (14-16 times) in moisture conditions. Other important properties include chemical resistance and absolute non-toxicity.
The largest deposits of bentonite are located in the USA. One of them is called “Benton”, from which the mineral got its name.
